I’ve read reviews but I’m not yet sure which one to go for.
It depends what you will be using them for.
The DVX100b has much bigger lenses and imaging chips (3CCDs), has XLR audio input and is much more of a "professional grade" camcorder. It can do DV (4:3) and DV widescreen (16:9)… but not high definition. It can do true 24p.
The HD1000U is a shoulder mount camcorder – but it has the same lenses and single CMOS chip as the consumer HDR-HC9. Audio-in is via a single stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) audio jack. It is essentially a consumer camcorder in a big footprint – but it can do DV (4:3) and DV widescreen (16:9) and high definition 1080i (which, by definition is 16:9). It cannot do 24p, but has a poor imitation, digitally derived "CineFrame" feature.
If these are the only two to choose from, I think I would get the DVX100… BUT, I would strongly suggest you look at the Sony HDR-FX1000 – it replaced the HDR-FX1 and is a much better camcorder than the HVR1000U.
